Kristian Birkeland
He was a physicist and made his mark in two quite different areas. He developed the method for extracting nitrogen from the air, which formed the basis for artificial fertilizers. Although this had a significant impact on food production, for Birkeland, it was a side project that could finance his true passion, research in electromagnetism and atmospheric phenomena such as the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
