The Venue

We are looking forward to seeing you in Sandefjord in June 2024!

Sandefjord is known for shipping, shipbuilding, whaling and the chemical industry, it is a maritime and cultural city rich in tradition. Here, the Vikings left their mark, international greats visited the town's spas and whalers had their heyday. The municipality is also known for housing the remains of a town from the Viking Age in the form of the Gokstadhaugen and associated house foundations and streets. The Gokstad ship was found in 1880.

The name Sandefjord itself derives from the farm Sandar, which was located in the innermost part of the fjord. Sandefjord became a market town in 1845, and before that was a shipping center with great activity in shipbuilding and shipping. In 1845, 749 people lived in Sandefjord. The city center had a rural character, and mainly consisted of two streets with buildings below Oddefjell (Preståsen). There were 80 children of school age living in the town, with only one teacher and one classroom. There was no hospital, but two rooms and four beds were kept ready in the town's poor house in case of cholera. The years 1845 to 1875 were boom times for Sandefjord, as for the whole country. Much timber and other goods were shipped from here, and the town's shipping increased. On the night of 16 March 1900, the city center burned down. During the reconstruction, the streets were regulated, and new street names introduced.

But Sandefjord is also well known for being a summer town, with its beautiful archipelago and record number of hours of sunshine per year. The city has a coastline of 160 kilometers, with 124 islands and islets, countless cliffs, beaches, and beautiful natural areas.
