Hackathon topics
Innovating for a Safe, Secure, and Sustainable Arctic
Develop new sustainable concepts and digital solutions that contribute to a safer, more secure and more sustainable Arctic. Your idea should address real needs in Arctic communities and industries, where environmental vulnerability, long distances and limited infrastructure create unique challenges.
Example ideas:
- Maritime safety and monitoring (e.g. sea ice detection, vessel tracking, pollution alerts)
- Emergency preparedness and response (search & rescue support, risk maps, situational awareness)
- Secure and resilient communication in remote areas (satellite communication, positioning and navigation support)
- Climate and environmental monitoring (extreme weather, climate indicators, nature impact tracking)
- Sustainable logistics and transport (routing, infrastructure constraints, weather‑aware planning)
- Support for Arctic livelihoods and communities (fisheries, reindeer herding, tourism, local decision support)
- Tools for indigenous communities (e.g. Sámi) and other local stakeholders
- Planning and infrastructure monitoring (land/sea‑use planning, critical infrastructure status, change detection)
The mission:
Design and prototype an innovative software application or digital tool that helps enable a safe, secure and sustainable Arctic.
- Use space‑based data and/or services (e.g. Earth observation imagery, weather and climate data, positioning/navigation, satellite communications)
- Show a clear Arctic use case (who it helps, what problem it solves, and why the Arctic context matters)
- Include a simple business concept (how it could be deployed, used and maintained, and potential users/customers/partners)
