Hackathon topics

Innovating for a Safe, Secure, and Sustainable Arctic

This hackathon will be dedicated to developing innovative digital solutions for a safer, more secure, and sustainable Arctic. This event will bring together participants to address the unique challenges faced by Arctic communities—challenges that are increasingly critical due to the region’s environmental vulnerability, evolving strategic significance and heightened global attentio

Climate and Environmental Resilience
Participants will be invited to create digital tools that leverage satellite data, Earth observation technologies, and local insights to help Arctic communities monitor and respond to environmental threats such as permafrost thaw, sea ice retreat, and coastal erosion. Solutions may include early warning dashboards, predictive models for infrastructure degradation, or platforms for sharing actionable climate risk information.

Maritime Safety and Emergency Preparedness
As Arctic maritime traffic increases, so do safety concerns. Challenge topics may include developing platforms that combine position tracking, communication systems, and observational data to support safer navigation and rapid emergency response in remote, often hazardous waters.

Security and Strategic Monitoring
With the Arctic’s growing strategic importance, solutions are needed to safeguard communities and critical infrastructure. Participants may work on tools for monitoring unauthorized activities, improving situational awareness, and enabling rapid response to security threats.
